Social Work - Central African Republic

DMI launched its development program in Central African Republic (CAR) in 2017 focusing on rebuilding communities by addressing their immediate and long-term needs. DMI currently works in 20 communities covering over 4200 families in CAR. DMI intervenes in the areas of Women Empowerment, Food Security and livelihood, Education in an emergency, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response. These programs support the vulnerable and the displaced communities in having access to holistic development in CAR.

Our vision is of a world where all people especially the oppressed and marginalized are empowered through education and development.

Enabling Women have Access to a Dignified Life

Objectives:

  • Women form SHGs leading to increase their cohesion, savings and leadership skills.
  • Women promote federations that enable them have access to their socio-economic rights.
  • Women build capacities in entrepreneurship to start small scale business that generates sustainable income.

Thedisadvantaged women members from Lobaye and Bangui are mobilized and trained on SHGs, functions and activities of SHGs. DMI conducts leadership training for the group leaders that enables them to set directions for the development of group members in improving their cohesion, savings, maintain registers and internal lending to support women to start income generation activities. Womenmembers of SHGs are guided to promote federation by consolidating women SHGs. The main functions of the federation are to support the group members in resolving theirand community problems; and foster members in functional literacy, education and social awareness. This process augmented the participation of women in local governance and in capacity building for their own development. Womenmembers in the federation are trained in business development skills such as catering, tailoring, entrepreneurship, and marketing skills that support them to start small scale business and generate sustainable income to address their poverty, hunger, poor family income, poor access to education of children etc.

Facilitating Farmers have Access to Food and Livelihood

Objectives:

Smallholder farmerspromote sustainable farming practices facilitating them to have access to food, availability of food and utilization of food.

DMI’s food security and livelihood program mobilises and facilities smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices in CAR. Semi-starvation and subsistent farming practices among farming families immensely affect their food security. DMI organises regular training on sustainable farming to help smallholder farming families to shift their subsistence farming practices to sustainable agriculture practices in order to increasecrop production. To expand the cultivation areas, DMI provides simple farming tools and seeds to the needy farmers in order to improve the household food productivity and to address hunger and starvation in families in CAR.

Supporting Children have Access to Education

Objectives:

  • Promote community schools that enable children have access to formal education.
  • Equip teachers on effective teaching and learning practices through capacity training.
  • Facilitate community member’s participation in safeguarding child rights through seminars and meetings.

DMI started preschools and informal community schools for the vulnerable children to address the rampant prevalence of malnutrition and poor access to basic and fundamental education in CAR. DMI provides regular capacity building training to schoolteachers working in community schools to adopt effective teaching methods and to practice their roles and functions that enables children to learn and enhance their subject knowledge and extracurricular skills for their bring future. Children are also supported with midday meals to improve their good health and their concentration. Children after community school program are mainstreamed into formal schooling. Community members are also sensitised on the importance of education and safeguarding their rights.

Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response

Objectives:

  • To organize relief assistance to the communities affected by conflict, flood and drought emergencies through health camps.
  • To facilitate IDP families lead a normal life through rehabilitation program.

DMI’s humanitarian assistance and disaster response program save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain human dignity during and after man-made crises and disasters caused by natural hazards, as well as to prevent and strengthen preparedness for when such situations occur. DMI assists them with food, relief materials and medical care in times of crisis.DMI also supports Person with disabilities (PWDs) in procuring durable, sophisticated and modern, standard aids and appliances that can promote their physical, social and psychological rehabilitation within their reach in Bangui, a capital city of CAR.
